MEET THE TEAM

We believe the success and longevity of The Barrington Group is due to our adherence to four core principles and our culture of putting people first to create a real sense of community where we all want to live, work, and invest.
Value  |  Pride  |   Stability  |   Integrity

LARRY LIEBERMAN

Picture

President & Founder

BIO
Larry Lieberman, along with his father (Richard), formed the corporation that is now the Barrington Group, in 1974.  They started buying distressed apartment communities from HUD in the late 60’s and turned the distress into success.  By the early 70’s the family had amassed about 2,000 apartment units in Central and Southern Ohio.  The time burden required to manage that many units kept the Lieberman’s from spending time in their other business interests and accordingly divested themselves of those interests.

Concurrently, the apartment industry went into a severe recession in 1973-4 due to overbuilding.  Larry realized that their skill in managing their apartments would be of value to other struggling owners or lenders who had foreclosed upon struggling projects.  Consequently, in 1974 Larry and Richard started the Rallie Company.  In 1977, after an exceptional growth period, Richard sold his interest to Larry to concentrate on the management of their original portfolio of properties.  Thereafter, the name was changed to the Barrington Group (BGI).

While BGI’s management and marketing skills attracted other owners to seek their management expertise, Larry’s desire to build a portfolio of properties that Larry had ownership interest in drove the business plan, so that by the mid 90’s Larry had acquired some 21 properties, spread over 5 states, and BGI was managing them all.

At the highlight of that portfolio, were properties that Larry had bought in the 90’s with his partner Metzger and Company, that brought accolades and awards to their rehab and management efforts.  The partners bought severely physically and financially distress apartment complex, closed them down, and rebuilt them as new or like new properties. BGI received the “RAHAB of the YEAR” award from the Indiana Apartment Association twice, once in 1994 and again in 1996.

With offices in Columbus Ohio and Atlanta Georgia, Larry came to believe that Florida was on the verge of a population explosion and that there was great opportunity for multifamily development.  So, in 1996, Larry moved himself and most of BGI to their new home in Sarasota, Florida.  While continuing to manage 4,000 apartment units in 5 states, BGI began developing a new townhome property that BGI designed.  Again, with their partner Metzger and Co, BGI developed and built a new property in Atlanta and in Sarasota. Although the Sarasota property was built to be a rental property BGI’s marketing expertise was demonstrated when they sensed that the market would be best served by selling the units as condominiums and began selling just as construction was starting.

18 years after their move to Florida, while continuing to own their portfolio of apartment properties, BGI is fully involved in new property development, and land acquisition.  BGI has since developed (again with their construction partner Metzger and Company) two new townhome properties,  a 90 unit luxury condominium project known as Savannah Preserve (construction started March ’06), and working on a Sarasota Bay waterfront luxury condominium community known as Long Bar Pointe (roadway construction started July ’06).

Larry is a graduate of The Ohio State University with a BS in Economic Geography and Land Planning, attained his GRI (Graduate Realtor Institute) also from The Ohio State University, has held an Ohio Brokers license for 31 years, and was President of the Ohio Apartment Association in 1976.  He has served on the boards of several charitable institutions such as the Alzheimer's Assoc in Franklin County, The Hannah Neil House, and is currently active in the Jump Start program in Manatee County. During the Reagan administration, President Reagan appointed Larry to the Board of Governors of the National Republican Congressional Committee.
